    Dr. Canaan Whitfield-Cargile, DVM, PhD, DACVS-LA, DACVSMR-Equine
    Dr. Brent Norwood
Dr. Janet Grimes, DVM, MS, DACVS-SA

  • Purpose

    • Augment gastrointestinal system lectures and cumulative review interactive activity with anatomical illustrations
    • Expose first year veterinary students to surgical and clinical practice while reinforcing understanding of arterial branching pattern and supply of the canine GI system

This labeled illustration was displayed in the first year veterinary students’ cumulative review interactive for the gastrointestinal tract. The illustration schematically represents arterial branching patterns and supply to the stomach, pancreas, and spleen.

Double suture ligation technique along with a large spatial separation between ligated arteries and the spleen were used to quickly communicate to first year students where supply was cut for a total splenectomy. Bright aqua suture material was depicted to be colorblind-friendly and stand out visually despite their small size.

Intact anatomy was also illustrated to act as a reference for veterinary students learning about arterial supply to the stomach, pancreas, and spleen. This illustration was used for review flashcards and eLearning resources.
